THE ARCHIMEDEAN SCREW GENERATOR
The Archimedes Screw has been pumping water for over 2000 years. By running them in reverse, the screw now offers a new method for generating power from water.
Archimedean Screw Turbines are well suited to this location with a high efficiency for low head operation (In this case some 2.1 metres). Requiring only a coarse debris screen and automatic weir penstock to control the inlet flow, the screw turbine will be of visible benefit for educational purposes; it being on the Tutbury English Heritage Trail.
The existing fish ladder built by the Environment Agency (EA) in recent years, is already in place and provides a route for fish to get over the weir going upstream. The Archimedean screw generator is fish-
In advance of the results of the consultation with EA and others in the near future, the construction detail is yet to be finally established. However the necessary take off chamber and leat (channel) connecting the Dove upstream of the weir and the screw structure and equipment housing will be built to provide a safe viewing platform for visitors.
The electricity generated will be fed directly into the national grid via a new pole mounted transformer feeding into the overhead 11kV local power distribution network close by.
